Forty-one pairs are disassembled, graded by wash depth, and reassembled across the frame so that the seat deck reads darkest and the arms lightest — the way a pair of jeans wears on a body. Nothing is placed at random. The layout for each Jouch is drawn on paper before a single seam is opened.
Development
Eleven grades, sorted by eye
We spent the first year of the company trying to automate wash grading. A spectrophotometer reads indigo depth accurately and tells you nothing about how a panel will look beside another panel, which is the only question that matters. We now sort by eye, in north light, against a reference board, and the machine sits in a cupboard in Greensboro.

Why the arms are lighter
A pair of jeans does not fade evenly. It fades where a body touches it — the seat, the knees, the thigh where a hand rests. We built the Jouch to read the same way, which meant sorting reclaimed denim into eleven wash grades before cutting anything.
The darkest grades go to the seat deck, where a sofa takes the most weight and would otherwise fade first. The lightest go to the outside arms. Over the first several years of ownership the two converge, and the Jouch arrives at the appearance it was designed for. This is the only piece we make that is not finished on the day it ships.

Ownership
Care
- Vacuum weekly on the lowest setting with an upholstery head.
- Rotate seat cushions each quarter, front to back, then left to right.
- Spot-treat with cold water and a soft brush. Never a detergent.
- Keep out of direct afternoon sun for the first eighteen months.
Questions we are asked
Before you commit
How long before it softens?
Six months of daily use brings the seat deck to what we would call comfortable. The arms take closer to two years. The Jouch is not uncomfortable when it arrives, but it is honest about being new.
Can I sit on it in jeans?
Yes. Denim-on-denim contact is the fastest route to patina. Some owners consider this accelerated aging and some consider it a faux pas. We take no position.
What happens if a seam opens?
You send us a photograph and we send a technician. Chain-stitched seams are repaired in place, on your floor, usually within the hour. Structural repairs are covered for life.
Will it transfer indigo onto light flooring?
A raw Jouch will crock slightly at the feet during its first season. We recommend the felt pads included in the delivery kit, or the One-Year wash, which sheds most loose indigo before the piece leaves the atelier.
Can I order it in a colour?
No. There is one colour and it is the colour the garments arrived in. We are asked this roughly twice a month and the answer has never moved.
